Dear Jen,
We're about to embark on a bold, new chapter in the civil rights movement of our generation. The Human Rights Campaign is proud to announce the launch of Project One America—an unprecedented and historic effort to dramatically expand LGBT equality in Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas. Why? We've made tremendous progress toward equality. But today LGBT people live in two Americas—one where equality is nearly a reality and another where members of our community are still struggling for equal citizenship. It's time to broaden our focus to the people least served by the LGBT movement. The need couldn't be greater, but so are the opportunities. These three states share the distinction of having no local or state laws that protect individuals from discrimination in the workplace, housing or public accommodations—and each state's constitution expressly prohibits marriage equality. Contrast that sad fact with this reality: these states also have some of the highest rates of LGBT couples raising children in the country and in fact, Mississippi has the highest in the nation. Will you stand with the Human Rights Campaign in support of Project One America? We must fight to bring equality everywhere, for everyone. For too long, many Americans have treated the South like the "finish line" for LGBT equality. That's not just an incorrect view—this Arkansas native thinks it's offensive. Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas have many more fair-minded people like you who are waiting to be heard. HRC has worked with our allies in the South for decades, leading political and field campaigns, grassroots education efforts and volunteer communities. |
