Small businesses are key drivers of the U.S. economy. This week, Secretary Jacob J. Lew and Deputy Secretary Sarah Bloom Raskin joined many others during National Small Business Week to show their support and highlight the importance of sustaining them. Today Secretary Lew dropped by Juice Joint Café on Vermont Avenue. While there, he met with the manager Tom Holland, who opened the business 17 years ago. The menu focuses on healthy eating options and offers fresh ingredients for juices, sandwiches, and wraps. Tom and Secretary Lew discussed the challenges and rewarding successes of running a small business, and how a $430,000 loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration helped Juice Joint Café grow.
On Tuesday, Deputy Secretary Raskin visited Heller's Bakery in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood, which opened in 1922 and is a well-known landmark in the area. The business received a total of approximately $20,000 in loans from the Latino Economic Development Center, a lending institution participating in the Treasury Department's Community Development Financial Institution Fund program. The loan provided the bakery with the capital it needed to make necessary investments in building renovations and inventory. Speaking to owner Aleks Duni, Deputy Secretary Raskin noted how businesses like his contribute significantly to the vitality of a community and its local economy. From her visit, she took with her Duni's personal success story as well as boxes of sweets back to the Treasury.
Throughout this week, Treasury Notes has featured content that tell the story of Treasury's far-reaching involvement in supporting small businesses. The Small Business Lending Fund and the State Small Business Credit Initiative also play key roles in Treasury's efforts to spur innovation, economic growth, and jobs around the country.
